Seventy percent of American voters now oppose a data center near them, and the most popular explanation is that Beijing is paying for it. This Special Report checks that claim and the three underneath it. The influence operations were real — but X's 200,000-account bot farm contained 200 accounts on AI and energy policy, with no payer named and zero engagement when Clemson audited them. The capacity sits in the richest county in America; all US data centers evaporate about a 190th of what American lawns take; electricity prices rose in PJM and stayed flat in Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Arizona.
